Kavita Singh

Kochi Biennale 2016 curator to be chosen Saturday

New Delhi, May 28: The Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) will choose the curator of the third edition of India’s only biennale coming up next year-end, by holding this weekend a top-level meeting that would ensure transparency to the key selection process.

A high-powered Artistic Advisory Committee comprising nine members including KBF trustees, artists, scholars and patrons will meet in the national capital on May 30 to decide on the person who would be curating the next Kochi-Muziris Biennale slated to begin on December 12, 2016.

The Saturday deliberations will be attended by top KBF President Bose Krishnamachari, Secretary Riyas Komu and Trustee Sunil V, besides art critic Ranjit Hoskote, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art’s Chairperson Kiran Nadar, gallerist Shireen Gandhy and artists Atul Dodia, Jyothi Basu and Bharati Kher.

The 2010-founded KBF, which is a non-profit organisation headquartered at Kochi in central Kerala, had formed the panel recently to ensure transparency in the process of selecting the curator, official sources said today.

“The new artistic advisory board consists of eminent and respected personalities from the world of art; and not just KBF officials,” pointed out Krishnamachari.

Added Komu: “That ensures a continuation of the transparent process to select the new curator. It won’t be a unilateral decision.”

The KBF’s first such committee had met in 2013 and chosen Jitish Kallat as the curator of the 2014 KMB which lasted for 108 days before concluding on March 29 this year. That body comprised art historian Geeta Kapur, Bhau Daaji Laad Museum director Tasneem Zackeria Mehta, artists Sheela Gowda and Balan Nambiar, Gujral Foundation’s Feroze Gujral and curator-gallerist Abhay Maskara, besides Krishnamachari and Komu.

National Museum opens rare show of calligraphy & craftsmanship

·                     Minister Mahesh Sharma inaugurates exhibition of Arabic-Persian inscriptions
New Delhi, May 15: Age-old aesthetics of calligraphy and craftsmanship combined in a rare show that began in the capital this evening when Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture Dr Mahesh Sharma inaugurated a two-month exhibition of Islamic-style writing on objects of daily use.

Displaying 56 utility artefacts from the past five centuries, ‘Art of Calligraphy and Beyond: Arabic-Persian Inscriptions on Decorative Arts objects’ at National Museum (NM) focuses on tastefully done inscriptions on metal-ware, wood, textiles and semi-precious stones — all of them from its own reserve collections.
The minister, after taking a round of the 59-day exhibition, said sought to reinforce the country’s syncretism. “This great institute (NM) is doing a wonderful work to preserve our art and culture with this calligraphy exhibition,” he wrote on the visitors’ register.
NM’s Director-General Sanjiv Mittal, who accompanied the minister along the gallery pointed out that the show curated by his curators Dr Anamika Pathak and Mr Zahid Ali Ansari focused on inscriptions beyond the usual medium of paper and architecture.
Dr Pathak, who is NM curator (decorative arts) explained to the minister how the show has its artefacts arranged in five main groups: writing implements, religion, faith, tradition and trade.
All what is written on the exhibits has been made intelligible to the general visitor as Dr Naseem Akhtar, an authority on Arabic-Persian language, has transcribed all the inscriptions at the gallery designed by NM’s Layout Artist Kuldeep Pokhriyal and Priya.
The exhibition, which will be on till July 12, is not just about Arabic-Persian inscriptions on a set of artefacts, the oldest among them being from 1494. Several other qualities make it unique. For instance, it shows different forms of surface ornamentation and aesthetic values.

“Sometimes it increases its value, especially when the name of the patron or calligrapher is inscribed on the object,” pointed out Dr Pathak, NM curator (decorative arts).
For instance, a brass shallow bowl from circa 1495 CE (the oldest at the show) belongs to Sultan Sikander Lodi who ruled Delhi for 28 years from 1489. Interestingly, it informs the name of the calligrapher—as Mohmood Bin Mahammad Bin Haji Mahmood Farsi.
Similarly, a brass globe from the period of Mughal emperor Shajahan (1627-58) informs the maker’s name: Mohammad Ibn Illahdad Humayuni Lahori.
What’s more, the works are not confined to paper. One can find beautiful inscriptions on objects such as metal-ware pen-cases, bowls, plates, alams, wooden boxes, mendicant bowls, amulets, bracelets, textiles and costumes.
Twenty artefacts at the exhibition are “very important”, said Mr Ansari, assistant curator (decorative arts). For, these provide details such as the name of the calligrapher, the date of manufacturing or/and the name of the owner. The objects have been decorated with different techniques such as koftagari or damascening, bidri, niello, engraving, writing, printing and embroidering on textiles.

The calligraphy exhibition got on a day before the concluding date of another temporary show — on the culture of India’s biggest tribal community. Named ‘Cadence and Counterpoint: Documenting Santal Musical Traditions’, the 32-day exhibition has 44 instruments and a film on their culture, besides their photographs over six-and-a-half decades from 1950.

SAITAN: A trailblazer in the art of theatre

New Delhi, 28 April 2015-As professionals, they have honed their skills in the best of medical institutions in the country, but once out of their white aprons, they effortlessly enter into a world of grease and paint to show their theatrical prowess. If they are dexterous with scalpel and stethoscope, they are also firmly grounded in the world of art.

Giving wings to their love and passion for theatre is a group, called SAITAN, launched last year by two sprightly youths, Namita Verma and Rajneesh Gautam. While Rajneesh, himself a medical student, has done theater with some professional groups like Roobaroo, The Illusionists and Manchayan; Namita, an avid supporter of theatre, comes from a PR background.

“We had this idea about creating a platform which would serve as a learning and performing tool for theatre enthusiasts, especially medical students who are deprived of showcasing their talents. That’s how this group came in existence,” explains Rajneesh.

“Actually, the word SAITAN is a combination of two words — SAINT and SATAN. It reflects us; we all have our good side and bad; we are our own God and Devil. So this word reflects the human, and all our plays are about people,” he expounds.

He points out that all of the crew, except Namita, have a medical background and they are also writers, actors, directors etc. “This is the only theatre group in Delhi which has its full crew as doctors. There is a notion that medical guys are always sort of nerds and bookworms. But there is a hell lot of artistic talents and creativity in medical students. We guys have a lot to portray on the canvas of art, including theatre. What we lack is a suitable infrastructure and platform to showcase that.”

In July last year, the group got off the block by staging its first play "The deadly sins", a thriller based on the biblical Seven Deadly Sins. Rajneesh directed the play, which is based on a fiction that explores different perceptions of the good and the evil. In this Christian mythological thriller, the seven cardinal sins mentioned in the Bible are presented in seven different acts. The main protagonists of all seven acts are Anthony and Luc Salvatore who explore gluttony, lust, sloth, greed, envy, wrath and pride.
Salvatore offers Anthony two choices: either die or hear six stories that involve the sins he committed in the course of his life. The crux of this play is that a sin does not mean doing wrong; it also means inaction, failure to do what is right.

The group is now working on a play "DAAYAN D", which is based on a woman who is accused of killing her husband and of practicing witchcraft. It’s a courtroom drama, with a tinge of suspense in it.

“This is our self-scripted play. There is another script on which we are working. It is a Hindi adaptation of Agatha Christie's celebrated novel, Murder on the Orient Express,” says Namita.

About the play, "Murder at the Empress", she says it is a murder mystery based on a script written by Phillip C. Wagner under the same name. “This time, we are associated with the Stage play society of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, ENTELECHY . This play is directed by Bhoomika Meena which will be on 4th May at Akshara Theater, CP.

Synopsis:
What if a rich sociopath woman lived on the fifth floor of a venerable hotel, where the rooms are no longer rented?? What if she is a maniac? What if a mere improvisation of a murder trapped two actors in a real murder mystery? What if the honesty and gullibility of a maid cost her a lifetime?
That's the premise of this eerie and entertaining romp, which in itself is a delightfully tricky theatrical puzzle. As the mystery continues, new secrets unfold changing the course of the investigation every time the detective is about to catch the murderer.

Culture Secretary Ravindra Singh and Switzerland Ambassador to India Dr. Linus Von Castelmur release ‘Cadence and Counterpoint: Documenting Santal Musical Traditions’ at National Museum on April 15 Wednesday ahead of the opening of a 32-day exhibition on the Santali tribe and culture.
Visitors take a look at various Santali drums on display at ‘Cadence and Counterpoint: Documenting Santal Musical Traditions’, a 32-day exhibition on the Santali tribe and culture, which began at National Museum on April 15 Wednesday.
The 'Chadar Badar' puppetry set on display at ‘Cadence and Counterpoint: Documenting Santal Musical Traditions’, a 32-day exhibition on the Santali tribe and culture, which began at National Museum on April 15 Wednesday.

National Museum’s Rama Katha series to be on display in Oz

New Delhi, Apr 13: Australia is set to get a fresh peek at India’s visual art heritage associated with the Ramayana, as National Museum (NM) here is lending 101 miniature paintings on the celebrated epic for their exhibition in the largest art museum Down Under.
The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in Canberra will next month receive NM’s set of Rama-Katha collection that features varied-style miniature paintings done between the 17th and 19th centuries. Pooled in from India’s northern, central and eastern territories, the grand body of artwork will be on display in the 1967-founded NGA for three months from May 22.
Australia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Julie Bishop Bishop meets India's Minister of State for Culture (Independent Charge) Dr. Mahesh Sharma, in New Delhi today, to formally announce the opening of a three-month Rama-Katha exhibition at National Gallery of Australia in Canberra from May 22.
Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop, while announcing this formally here today amid a meeting with India’s Minister of Culture and Tourism Dr Mahesh Sharma, stressed the need for collaborative efforts between nations to promote heritage.
“We must be undertaking more such endeavours,” added the minister, who later visited NM and viewed the Rama-Katha series.
Dr Sharma noted that the upcoming exhibition strove to re-kindle global interest in Indian miniature paintings, particularly those to the great epics of the country.
“While this exhibition will certainly be a treat for Indian audiences in Australia, it will also be a special way of introducing aspects of Indian culture among its citizens, further empowering the strong cultural tie between the two countries,” he noted.
NM Director-General Dr Venu V pointed out that both India and Australia have a rich history, particularly of oral cultures.
“The Rama-Katha is part of this oral inheritance where the epic has grown many layers, as is the case with interpretations around it through ages,” he said. “Introducing the Ramayana story to Australian audiences through this exhibition will also be a great opportunity to bring international histories closer.”
NM curator Dr Vijay Kumar Mathur, who has selected the 101 paintings in chronological progression capturing the story of the Ramayana that has caught public imagination for over 2,500 years, said the collection is one of India’s richest artefacts.
“These miniatures are from schools such as Mughal, Deccan, Pahari, Rajasthan and Central India. They represent a matured movement that colourfully visualises the spirit of the Ramayana,” he noted, recalling that NM had organised a Rama-Kathaexhibition in 2013, after which it travelled to Belgium.
Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop briefed by NM curator, Dr V K Mathur on Monday, April 13, ahead of the Rama-Katha exhibition at National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, starting May 22.

NM, which was established in 1949, is India’s premier museum, housing collections of sculptures, paintings and artefacts representing 5,000 years of art in the subcontinent. NGA, which holds more than 166,000 works of art, is the national art museum of Australia.

National Museum selected for Global Museum Leaders Colloquium in New York

New Delhi, Mar 31 : The National Museum, which has transitioned from a slumbering institution to a place throbbing with events and footfalls, has been selected to participate in the  Second Global Museum Leaders Colloquium (GMLC) to be held in New York next month.

The April 13–23 Colloquium, to be hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, will witness an assemblage of 15 international museum leaders who are to deliberate on measures to broaden international dialogue about museum management.

Dr. Venu V., the Director General of National Museum who has launched a slew of trailblazing initiatives to reinvigorate the 65-year-old institution, will represent it at the annual colloquium. The 14 other museum leaders selected for the brainstorming meet are from the UK,  China, Colombia, New Zealand, Benin, Cameroon, Iran, Nigeria, Peru, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines and Vietnam.

The list of the participants was announced recently by Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This year’s GMLC participants include directors of national, private and academic museums, which together account for an annual attendance of more than five million visitors and collections of nearly six million objects.

The 11-day GMLC is expected to provide a 360-degree view of current museum practices worldwide, placing a strong emphasis on institutional leadership and strategic problem solving.

Dr Venu said the GMLC, though barely in its second edition, has come to be recognized as a significant international platform for museum leaders and administrators to discuss and strategise measures to reinvigorate museums.

“The challenge for the museologists and museum administrators is to hammer out new strategies that would increase footfalls at museums and make them a focal point in the spectrum of culture and art,” he said, adding: “There is a commonality in challenges for museums across the globe.”

Dr Venu, who assumed charge of the museum in December 2013, has been instrumental in giving a makeover to the institution by holding of a slew of new exhibitions and launching new initiatives.

Over the past two years, it has hosted eight exhibitions as compared to six in the entire decade before 2012. In 2014, it held one of the biggest ever exhibitions of Indian art; titled 'The Body in Indian Art', showcasing around 300 artefacts collected from museums and private collectors across the country. It also showcased Kerala’s Pattanam artefacts on its maritime links with the ancient world.  In addition, it has also reopened four galleries, including Alamkara (jewellery galley), which were shuttered for years.

To Dr Venu also goes the credit of launching the Outreach Department and Volunteer Guide Scheme, under which trained volunteers lead visitors on informed tours of the museum. The initiatives have made visiting the museum a lively and friendly experience, a fact testified by recent visitors to the museum.

Kochi biennale facilitates global art dialogue: Kerala Governor

India’s top event to shape new generation of artists, says Sathasivam
Kochi, Mar 29: The Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) has created a sustainable platform for international dialogue and enrichment of contemporary art, Kerala Governor Justice (retd) P Sathasivam said today.
“It has, in the process, raised Indian art to a global level,” he said while delivering a special address at the closing ceremony of the second Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) which will formally conclude on Sunday evening with the lowering of the flag at the main Aspinwall House venue.
Noting that the 108-day festival has mainly exhibited 100 works by 94 artistes from 30 countries, the Governor said a Students’ and Children’s biennale held as part of KMB’14 had the potential to shape a new generation of top-class artists from Kerala and rest of the country.
“The word ‘biennale’ has now become very popular in this state even as it has origins in the Italian language where it simply means any event that happens every other year,” he told the packed gathering at Ernakulam’s Durbar Hall Ground, where Delhi-based Ska Vengers band later performed a lively reggae concert that spanned two hours and succeeded a dance show by Jazz Masters.

Kerala Governor Justice P Sathasivam addresses the Kochi-Muziris Biennale closing ceremony at Durbar Hall Ground in Ernakulam on March 28 evening. Seated (from left): KBF Secretary Riyas Komu, curator Jitish Kallat, MLAs Thomas Issac, Dominic Presentation, Culture Minister K C Joseph, Excise Minister K Babu, Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany, GCDA chief N Venugopal and KBF president Bose Krishnamachari.
The closing ceremony, which was presided over by Kerala Culture Minister K C Joseph amid the presence of his cabinet colleague K Babu, was also addressed by legislators Dr Thomas Isaac MLA and Dominic Presentation. Other dignitaries included Kochi Corporation Mayor Tony Chammany and Greater Kochi Development Authority Chairman N Venugopal, besides Kochi Biennale Foundation President Bose Krishnamachari, secretary Riyas Komu and KMB’14 curator Jitish Kallat.

In his presidential address, Mr Joseph expressed happiness that a deluge of criticism that plagued the first edition of the biennale in 2012 had “completely vanished” two years later by when the ongoing KMB began in December 12, 2014.

“The biennale is a big blessing to Kerala; its aesthetics are a major exposure to its people,” he added.

Dr Issac said a rising middle-income group in the contemporary economy would mean a gradual surge in investment in art and encouragement to the world of culture.

Mr Chammany and Mr Venugopal also spoke.

Komu, in his welcome address, said KMB, with its manifold rise in use of public space, has change people’s general notions about contemporary art.

Also, India’s only biennale has managed to clear a cloud over its British-narrated history by bringing in artworks that invoke momentous episodes from the country’s past, he added.

Kallat recalled the challenges he took up ahead of the biennale as its artistic director, while Krishnamachari, while proposing thanks, said the curatorial theme of ‘Whorled Explorations’ was a “runaway hit” from day one of this biennale slated to conclude tomorrow.

The Ska Vengers concert, staged amid strobe lights and loud cheers from the crowd, was powered by its young artistes, blending Ska rythms with elements of dub, punk, jazz and rap.

Incidentally, KMB’14 showcased the richness of Kerala’s traditional ensembles at its opening show. That was at Fort Kochi’s Parade Ground, where renowned chenda maestro Peruvanam Kuttan Marar led a two-hour show of 300-plus artistes on the state’s ethnic drums, pipes, horns and gongs, ahead of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurating the second edition of India’s only biennale.
